Healthcare professionals do not need to grapple with the concept of diabetes remission/reversal anymore.
Over recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role of low carbohydrate diets in the management of diabetes. It is now recognized as a valid intervention in type 2 diabetes management by several specialist societies, including Diabetes UK, the British Dietetic Association, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Diabetes Canada, Diabetes Australia and the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Several clinicians around the world including Kenya have adopted this approach and shown it to be effective in many patients in reducing weight, HbA1c and medication use, thus generating significant cost savings. In many cases, patients have put their type 2 diabetes into remission.
Most diabetes healthcare professionals were trained in an era when a high carbohydrate, low-fat diet was recommended for people with diabetes, even though diabetes is, by definition a condition of carbohydrate/glucose metabolism impairment/intolerance. Some remain sceptical about the benefits of a low carb approach, or anxious about adverse effects.
Dr Daniel Katambo, a consultant physician in Kenya, has teamed up with Dr David Cavan, a consultant Endocrinologist and Author (UK), to deliver a course suitable for all health professionals involved in the care of people with diabetes. They both have extensive international experience in low carb management and remission of type 2 diabetes.
For this reason, Afyacode LTD in association with Cavan Health LTD has embarked on a journey to train healthcare professionals and caregivers on Basic principles in type 2 diabetes remission using lifestyle interventions.
This course provides healthcare professionals with the latest scientific evidence and research in low carb management of type 2 diabetes.
The course is fully online and flexible running at various set times of the year. One can select a specific convenient time of the year to train. Each session is interactive with open discussions and interactions enabling participants to reflect on all that they have learned and how to apply it in practice.
